Archival Preservation
for museums, etc.

Purpose: To preserve the content by retaining every possible characteristic of the analog source material.

Typical Uses: Long-term archiving; As source material for excerpting, digital restoration, and distribution.

File Specifications:

Audio: Bwav, Wav, 24-bit/48kHz or higher.

Video: 10-bit Uncompressed or lossless codec in archive container (AVI, MXF, MOV).

  Film: DPX, image sequence, and lossless codecs (MagicYUV, FFV1 etc.) as with video.

Photo: TIFF, BMP, & other uncompressed.

Professional Conversion A
for pro applications

Purpose: To re-format the content for modern professional use at the highest quality possible.

Typical Uses: Digital Mastering; As

source material for editing & post-production, Files for distribution.

File Specifications:

Audio: Wav, 16 & 24-bit/48kHz or higher.

Video: 8 & 10-bit Lossless & intra-frame codecs such as ProRes, DNx, DV, x264, etc.

   Film: Lossless & intraframe codecs such as MagicYUV, ProRes, and Grass Valley HQX.

Photo: TIFF, BMP, RAW, PNG, JPEG, etc.

Professional Conversion B
for end users

Purpose: To efficiently re-format the content for everyday use, retaining as much perceptual quality as possible.

Typical Uses: To view/listen, & share; Annotate & compile w/other content;

Long-term data storage & migration.

File Specifications:

Audio: Wav @ CD spec minimum; Mp3.

Video: 8-bit files in universal h.264/MP4 format for widest usage & excellent quality.

   Film: Lossless & intraframe codecs for the initial scan, plus an MP4 for wide use.

Photo: TIFF scans ideally, + JPEGs for use.

There are 4 main categories of analog audio-visual media, and each has many specific formats:

1. Audio

  • All common audio formats supported, with several machines per format.

  • Professional quality reproduction, processing, and conversion hardware.

  • Extensive post-processing resources to edit, optimize, and restore audio.

2. Video

  • All tapes exercised, tested, and repaired as needed.

  • Professional playback & hardware used throughout.

  • A high bit rate is used to ensure best quality.

    • For most analog video, we deliver MP4/H.264 video files with a 480p60 @ 5mbps specification.

  • Professional file formats & spec also available.

    • Interlaced or progressive, scaled (e.g. 720p) or not.

    • Windows or Mac codecs/formats for editing.

    • 4:2:2 color, intraframe, lossless, & other archive specs.

These consumer formats:

  • VHS, Super VHS (S-VHS), VHS-C (compact VHS)

  • Hi-8, Video8 (8mm), Digital8

  • DVD, miniDVD

3. Film

  • All films cleaned, compiled, and repaired as needed prior to scanning.

  • High resolution frame-by-frame scanning.

  • Full frame (not cropped) scans, with stable image registration.

  • Original scan files in professional file format ideal for editing or archiving…

  • Plus a second file set ready to view & share as-is (usually MP4 format).

  • ​Most importantly, Fully operated scanning. No automation. The standard professional service includes:

    • “Best light” scanning, where exposure is constantly optimized.

    • Color compensation in real time to avoid costly color correction later on.​
