Connect the dots and tell your story.
Go from “raw documentation” to “meaningful presentation”:

Level 1: Easiest.
Create a Digital Archive. You already have one! Just be sure to organize and identify your content for safe-keeping.
-
Use file names that identify people, places, dates, etc.
-
Group files into folders categorically as you see fit.
-
Backup your data. Have it on several devices, in a separate locations (cloud storage is a great option for this).
Level 2: Moderate.
Connect the dots. Provide context for the various recordings by filling in the blanks and telling the backstory.
Even if your knowledge is limited, your insights, and even speculation about the content can add tremendous value and meaning–especially to subsequent generations, who will appreciate your input.
Two easy ways to achieve this are:
-
Annotate. Simply write a text document to include with the relevant audiovisual content.
-
Narrate. Photo collections and silent films present the perfect opportunity to connect the dots and tell the stories.
Tips: 1. Doing some research and preparation is usually helpful, but…
2. …an unrehearsed, informal style is often more colorful and engaging, so…
3. …have fun with it!
Level 3. Advanced.
Create a multimedia production. There’s nothing like a story to engage an audience into a meaningful experience.
